Egan reached Audrey just as the laser light show was beginning. As each beam flared and pulsed to the syncopated music, the cheers grew louder.

Audrey leaned in close to ask, “Did you find them?”

“Yes!” He had to shout for her to hear him. “They were headed over to the buffet table. But just in case the chef’s special works as an aphrodisiac, I checked all the doors to the building. They were locked, so I don’t think—”

“Wait! I don’t know if I heard you!” she shouted.

He moved in so close that their eyes were only inches away.

Their lips too.

Egan fought the urge to kiss her. And yet, he wondered if Audrey would have been shocked or upset by it.

Or if her mouth would have accepted his eagerly, willingly.

If Chuck were right and she was anxious about something, a kiss would tell him what he’d suspected:

It’s because of me.

Egan looked into her eyes, hoping to find his answer there. Instead he found relief.

She was smiling again.

This was verified when she shouted, “Did you say the buffet table? And that the building was all locked up? Thank goodness! That’s all Lavinia needs—some reason for Seamus to pull his little princess from the school!” Audrey grimaced. “Not with…everything else Lavinia is going through.” The moment the words were out of her mouth, she pursed her lips as if daring anything else to come out.

There were so many lasers beaming up in the sky that Egan could see the single tear that had fallen onto Audrey’s cheek.

How he longed to touch it.

But…why is she crying?

He then remembered that just before they’d seen Chuck and Fawn sneak off, he was going to mention his concerns about her mother.

She’s not worried about me. She’s worried about Lavinia.

“Audrey, before I went after Chuck, I wanted to ask you something. Remember?”

Her smile faded as she nodded solemnly.

“It’s about Lavinia. Is she…well?”

Egan had seen such deep sorrow in Audrey’s eyes only once before: the afternoon they’d made love.

She hung her head so low that he had to bow his head to hear her say, “Lavinia…has cancer. But no one knows about it yet.” Audrey turned slightly so that he could see her lips as if assuring that he couldn’t mistake what she said next: “You’re the only other person who knows. I can’t even tell Daniel because he’s on the board, and he’d have a fiduciary responsibility to inform the others. Some of them would want to force her out!” Suddenly, Audrey clasped her hand to her mouth. “Oh my God! I forgot—you’re also on the board!” The tears were now falling furiously. “Egan, please…I’m begging you…”

So that she’d calm down, Egan held tight to both her hands. “Audrey, it’s okay! I’ll do anything you ask! You know that. I… I love her.”

And I love you.

Audrey was so grateful that she kissed his cheek.

Egan looked skyward, feigning awe of the colorful beams flaring over their heads. In truth, he was memorizing the soft touch of her kiss.
